Summit Preparatory High School was born from the aspirations, dreams, and vision of local parents, teachers, and community leaders. First conceived of in 2000 and developed until its opening in September 2003, the mission of this small public high school is to prepare a diverse student population for success in four-year colleges and to be thoughtful, contributing members of society. In this era of unprecedented global, cultural, political, and technological change, Summit offers a program that develops the entire range of capabilities—intellectual, physical, emotional, and social—to equip its students with the knowledge, skills, and strength of character required for success in their life pursuits. What sets Summit apart? * Focus on Students * Involved Parents & Community Focus on Students At Summit, every student has a tailored, individual experience. We work closely with every student and family to ensure success. The following are some of the ways we accomplish this goal: Personalized Learning Plan (PLP) Each student works with his/her faculty mentor as well as parents / guardians to develop a Personalized Learning Plan. It is in working through this plan that the student takes personal ownership of his/her learning, interests, and aspirations. This plan is dynamic in nature and evolves as the student gains knowledge, growth and experiences. Faculty Mentors Each faculty mentor is paired with no more than 18 students and stays with those students for four years. Mentor groups meet daily for 10 minutes and during the Connections course every Wednesday afternoon to help students clarify and achieve their goals. These relationships provide the student with personal attention, structure, resources, and standards. Connections Course Each week, students participate in a two-hour Connections Course. This course is designed to support and enhance each student’s learning experience. The four themes addressed in this course are academic literacy, teen issues, community building, and preparation for the future. Personalized Support Every student reaches his/her academic and personal goals because consistent, relevant, and personalized support is seamlessly integrated into every day. Beyond this, Summit is an extremely caring community. When a student needs support in his/her personal life, be it advice, a job, perhaps even a safe place to live, the Summit community jumps in to help in the most positive, supportive manner imaginable. Summit is more than a school – it is also a caring family. Independent Learning Each student’s PLP will dictate how the student is to spend his/her Independent Learning time. Options will include participation in study groups, peer/adult tutoring, athletics / physical activity or homework completion. Involved Parents & Community Integral to the success of Summit is the support of parents and the community. Summit’s rich curricular and extracurricular offerings are made possible through the use of powerful community partnerships and volunteer support. The community provides a living laboratory in which Summit students can apply academic concepts and skills beyond the classroom and bring real-world relevance to the high school experience. The outcome of this widespread collaborative effort is high school graduates who are prepared as knowledgeable, active, and caring global citizens. College for All Summit’s mission is to prepare every student for four-year college. Every Summit student will graduate with requirements that exceed the UC requirements for four-year college. This is unique on the peninsula, with no public schools preparing 100% of their students for college. Our goal is to enable each student to find the right college that best meets his or her needs. When students and their families meet the standards and expectations agreed upon with Summit, the student will get into a 4-year college that is a “Right Fit.” Please see the “College Resources” page for more information. |
